Survival Kit Pt. 2 - PORRIDGE

The yoghurt we made last time is multi useful. One of the great ways to use it, is porridge.

But porridge also deserves some attention in itself. It is very good food, especially eaten in the morning. My grandmother used to teach me: even if you eat nothing more during the day, you must, must, must eat breakfast. Porridge is cheap food, and easily stockable. You can get it in every store, it's part of the "basic food pack". It is not quite as wildly spreadable as yoghurt is, but it will suck a lot of water - so you just need a fistful per person. A kilo lasts a long time.

I make it the easiest way possible. I put 1 amount of oatmeals and 1,5 amount of water together in a dish, then I boil it, while I constantly stir it. Somewhere in the middle, when it starts to get sticky, I put in fruit - preferably raspberries or plums, but I hear bananas are also cool. Some people also like to put raising or chopped nuts in it, or serve it with marmalade instead of honey - but in crisis times, the basis of oats and yoghurt will also do just fine. I stir a bit more, take it away from heat, and leave it a bit. I serve it with home made yoghurt and honey, if a certain person didn't eat all of it just yet.
I read it's also cool to make it go cold and hard, then cut it to slices and bake those - so with porridge, nothing goes to waste.

I suspect oatmeals are good to stock for times ahead. They also make good protest food.
